U.S. Senate Candidate Angie Nixon Releases Statement on the Death of Civil Rights & Labor Icon Dolores Huerta
Following the passing of legendary labor leader, civil rights activist, and United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta, Rep. Angie Nixon released the following statement:
“Dolores Huerta leaves an indelible mark on what it means to fight for immigrant, civil, and workers’ rights. For more than seven decades, she proved that when working people stand together, we can bend history toward justice. She did not ask for permission to change the world – she picked up a bullhorn and did it. And in that way she is an inspiration for many of us, including myself.
“Her work is not finished. In the fields of Apopka to the warehouses of Jacksonville and beyond, workers who feed and supply this country are still fighting for fair pay, safe conditions, and the freedom to organize. Dolores taught us the answer is not despair: it is a union card, a voter registration form, and the refusal to back down.
“I stand on her shoulders, as does everyone who has ever been told to sit down or wait their turn. We honor her memory not just with words, but by continuing the work to realize the world she envisioned, where every worker is treated with unconditional dignity and respect. Rest in power, Dolores. We will keep organizing. ¡Sí, se puede!”
