U.S. Senate Candidate Angie Nixon Blasts Cruel Medicaid Cuts Kicking Nearly 177,000 Legal Immigrant Floridians Off Healthcare

After new federal restrictions taking effect on Oct. 1 kicked nearly 177,000 legal immigrant Floridians off their Medicaid coverage, U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon released the following statement:

“I know Florida’s current U.S. senators are used to screwing over working families when it comes to healthcare: Between Rick Scott’s historic Medicare fraud and Ashley Moody’s $10 million Hope Florida scheme, treating healthcare like a personal slush fund is practically a tradition for them. But let’s be clear about who they’re targeting now: refugees who fled war, asylum seekers who escaped persecution, human trafficking victims, and Afghan interpreters who risked their lives helping our troops. They’re all here legally, yet politicians like Ashely Moody stripped away their health insurance.

“Kicking 177,000 legal immigrants off of Medicaid doesn’t stop them from getting sick or injured; it just forces them into emergency rooms for basic care, which drives up costs at a time when Florida hospitals are already facing hundreds of millions of dollars in unpaid healthcare costs. Absent Ashley and her extremist Republican friends created this problem, and now they’re trying to trick you into blaming your neighbors for the crisis instead.

“Healthcare is a human right, not a political weapon. That’s why I am unequivocally in favor of Medicare for All. No one should go bankrupt just to stay alive or get basic medical treatment. We need a senator who will fight to guarantee healthcare for everyone and end the corporate corruption that’s price-gouging our families.”
