U.S. Senate Candidate Angie Nixon Calls Out Trump & Moody for Turning Their Backs on Cubans Fleeing Communism, Granting 99.7% Fewer Green Cards
MIAMI, FL – U.S. Senate candidate Representative Angie Nixon today called on the Trump administration to follow the law and stop the dangerous practice of not granting residency to people fleeing from Cuba. From April to June this year, the Trump administration — which Ashley Moody has continuously backed and supported — only granted U.S. residency to fewer than 140 people from Cuba, compared to nearly 50,000 residencies granted during the same period in a previous administration. In addition to denying, there are 342,000 Cuban Adjustment applications that are currently frozen.
“Florida is home to millions of Cuban Americans who fled Communist Cuba for the chance at a better life. But, Ashley Moody and Donald Trump have shamefully turned their backs on our Cuban communities — sending a record number back to suffer under an authoritarian regime with constant blackouts caused by a failed embargo.
“Instead of defending Cuban Americans in our state, Ashley Moody has backed Donald Trump’s cruelest policies while doing nothing to address the real issues Floridians face. Every step of the way, she has cheered on Trump’s extreme anti-immigrant agenda and deflected from real accountability. Florida deserves a senator who solves problems, not a politician who stands back while the communities she is supposed to serve are preyed upon.”
The Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966, which is still existing law, allows Cuban emigrants who have been physically present in the U.S. for at least a year and were legally admitted or paroled to apply for a lawful permanent resident (Green Card) status. Despite this, the data shows that Moody and Trump’s government are granting the opportunity of escaping Communism and finding freedom to 99.7% fewer Cuban Americans than under previous administrations, an unprecedented first in the past 60 years.
